History: Exploration by Kilembe Mining Ltd from 1956 to 1961 identified several copper-cobalt occurrences on which several confirmatory holes were drilled. While the mine was in operation from 1956 to 1972, a total of 16.2 million tones grading 1.98% copper and .17% cobalt were mined and approximately 270,000 tons of blister copper were produced. Over this span, mining was centered on the eastern deposits and the southwestern deposits were regarded as future developments.
Geology: The Kilembe Series which hosts the copper-cobalt mineralization occurs within the Precambrian Buganda-Toro System. The system stretches across the Southern Ugandan border from the Rwenzori Mountains in the west almost to the Kenyan border. The Rwenzori Mountains are a tilted fault block within the Western Rift Valley system between the DRC and Ugandan Rifts.
Past work Programs: In March of 2007 an Airborne Geophysical program was launched. The program consisted of 700,000 line kilometers of magnetic and radiometric data collection with an aim to better understand the geological layout of Uganda. This extensive and technically advanced geophysical program provided invaluable information not only for Vangold but for miners and explorers worldwide interested in exploring in Uganda.
Current Work and Future Work Programs: Exploration this year will begin with GPS relocation of the occurrences and possibly geological mapping and sampling.
